The day dawned foggy and cold in Lompoc this morning, the start of an eventful day that took
cyclists along the gorgeous Pacific coastline. Herewith are some highlights (and low lights):
- Rest stop 2’s French maids were … a vision. One was rather disheveled,
with smeared lipstick and dangling cigarette, declaring to passersby, “I
had a rough night last night.”
- Santa Barbara’s Paradise Pit, which is hosted for ALC riders by local
businesses, lured cyclists with its famous ice cream.
Not a single energy bar was in sight as participants loaded up on the sweet stuff.
- Oh those folks from Rest Stop 4. Cold as hell at the beach in their white
tutus and feather headdresses, they persisted in greeting each rider with a gracious porte
de bras.
- The day ended with the arrival in camp of friends and family who came up to
Ventura from LA to congratulate roadies and riders, and to experience camp life.
- Star of stage and screen, Wilson Cruz, performed at dinner for an appreciative
crowd.
- A candle-light vigil on the beach to commemorate people lost to AIDS, and to
honor the challenges that people currently living with the disease face on a
daily basis, was an incredible sight to behold.
